Single-kernel inspection and sorting platform

The QSorter® technology is at the heart of a new generation of inspection and sorting devices for grains, seeds, and beans. QualySense has pioneered this development with the help of first-class research institutes in Switzerland and the United States. The main objective of the QSorter® technology is to bring greater efficiency, productivity, and outstanding benefits to the field of grains, seeds, and beans.

One by One Transport

The QSorter® device can transport grains, seeds and beans one by one in a fixed position. This unique feature allows researchers to measure biochemical properties and retrieve shape, size, and color attributes with superior accuracy and precision. The transportation speed is extremely fast. The current version of the QSorter® can process, on average, about 30 kernels per second.

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

Unlike other sorting devices, the QSorter® collects a high-resolution near-infrared spectrum from every kernel. When a light source illuminates the kernel, a part of the energy is absorbed and the rest is reflected. The difference between the injected and the absorbed light is a function of the amount and type of biochemical properties that are present in the kernel. The spectra are composed of 512 points each and therefore they give precise details about the kernel’s internal composition. The technology makes it possible to detect a wide palette of compositional properties in every kernel, such as moisture, protein and oil content, gluten, sugar, fatty acid composition and so forth. Vision Technology

Most image analyzers only see one side of the kernel – the one exposed to the camera. We have developed an innovative setup that allows us to see the surface in its entirety – imagine how awesome that is! Our wide-angle optics are designed to cover almost 100% of the kernel’s surface for more accurate image analysis. Our CCD high-speed color camera can process up to 120 frames per second, with flexible illumination setups that help you see the previously unseen. The fixed position of the kernel allows the camera to record physical attributes such as shape, length, width, height, volume and color with great precision. Further analysis is employed to retrieve additional physical information such as kernels being broken or chalky.

Spectral Data Analysis

Spectral data is processed to define each biochemical property in a kernel. The system is calibrated on a per kernel basis. Single spectrum measurements are taken for each grain; subsequently, the scanned kernels are analyzed with classical laboratory wet chemistry techniques in order to establish the actual state of each biochemical property. Finally, various algorithms are applied to correlate spectral and laboratory measurements.

Image Processing

Color image processing is carried out with the help of machine learning algorithms. Several metrics are extracted from each picture and the AI develops classification rules that would guarantee high sensitivity, precision and repeatability.

Sorting System

The QSorter® can sort, not only inspect and it has an excellent sorting efficiency. This is due to the single kernel transport and the high precision of the sorting mechanism, which is based on pneumatics. This accuracy is key to a productive process, as no re-passes of the reject are needed to improve the overall efficiency of the device. In the long run, this enables a dramatic increase in productivity and in value.

Reporting System

The QualySense team has succeeded in presenting the results of inspection and sorting processes in a very simple and intuitive way. Experimental results are reported on a touchscreen graphical user interface (GUI). Several statistical metrics are reported for each parameter, such as mean value, count, and standard deviation. The final experiment report is saved on the QSorter® hard drive and can be printed in the most common formats.
