High Speed Single Kernel Analysis and Sorting

 

The QSorter® technology is at the heart of a cutting edge generation of inspection and sorting devices for grains, seeds, and beans. Since 10 years, we have pioneered this development with the help of first-class research institutes in Switzerland and the United States of America to help companies in food and agriculture to deeply understand the quality of their raw materials. This can be used to increase inspection efficiency, productivity and reduce waste drastically.

One by One: 30 to 3'000 kernels per second

The QSorter® platforms can transport grains, seeds and beans one by one in a fixed position. This unique feature enables the precise measurement of biochemical properties (e.g. protein, oil, sucrose, gluten, moisture) and physical attributes (e.g. shape, color, size, weight, defects). The QSorter® Explorer, the laboratory version of the QSorter® series, can transport 30 kernels per second. The QSorter® Horizon, instead, can analyze and sort 3'000 kernels per second, which makes it ideal for production environments.

Advanced Sensing

High-Resolution Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Sensor

The QSorter® is the only technology that uses a High-Resolution Near-Infrared (NIR) Spectrometer. When a special light source illuminates the kernel, the light rays are either transmitted through the kernel, absorbed by the kernel or diffusively reflected. The difference between the injected amount of light and the amount that is reflected is proportional to chemical structure of the kernel. This allows the precise measurements of compositional properties such as protein, moisture, oil, sucrose and many more. These data are key to understand the value of the raw material and to optimise the production for better efficiency and consistency.

2D/3D VISION Sensor

This other advanced sensor allows the QSorter® to inspect a great portion of the surface of the kernel and detect several properties and defects. Our wide-angle optics are designed to cover almost 100% of the kernel’s surface for more accurate image analysis. Our CCD high-speed color camera can process up to 120 frames per second, with flexible illumination setups that help you see the previously unseen. The fixed position of the kernel allows the camera to record physical attributes such as shape, length, width, height, volume and color with great precision. Further analysis is applied to retrieve even more complex parameters such as level of chalkiness and small defects.

Artificial Intelligence Algorithms

The signals of the High-Resolution Near Infrared Spectrometer and of the 2D/3D VISION Sensor are correlated to Wet Chemistry measurements or Visual Standard Inspection Practices, which define the "true" measurements. Such correlations are built by our team of algorithm experts; various complex data processing technologies are used such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Regressions and many others. Furthermore, the algorithms learn over the seasons in order to produce robust and repeatable performance to our customers.

99% Sorting System Accuracy

The QSorter® sorts with a very high efficiency. This is due to the single kernel transport and the high precision of the sorting mechanism, which is based on complex mechatronics and pneumatics. This accuracy is key during a production process, as no re-passes of the reject are needed to improve the overall efficiency of the device. In the long run, this enables a dramatic increase in productivity and in value.

Q-One®Digital Report

The QSorter® results are visualised on a friend Graphical User Interface. Several statistical metrics such as mean value, count and standard deviation are reported for each measured parameter at batch/lot level as well as at single kernel level. Furthermore, data are stored into the Q-One® Digital Report, which can be easily shared with colleagues and used to analyze the performance of the laboratory or of the plant over one or multiple season. The report can be customised to our organisational needs to include also other key data. Printing in the most common formats is, of course, enabled.
